Omega-3 (EPA/DHA)

aka Fish Oil

Marine long-chain omega-3s — the most-studied anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular nutrient.

Overview

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA) found in fatty fish and algae. Incorporated into cell membranes and serve as precursors to anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.

Natural sources
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Algae (vegan source)
Common forms
  • Triglyceride form (best absorbed)
  • Ethyl ester (cheaper)
  • rTG re-esterified TG (premium)
  • Phospholipid (krill)

Forms & variants of Omega-3 (EPA/DHA)

Different chemical forms of Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) behave differently. Browse each form's mechanism, bioavailability, and best-use context.

Mechanism of action

EPA/DHA replace arachidonic acid in cell membranes, shifting eicosanoid production from pro-inflammatory (PGE2) to resolution mediators (resolvins, protectins).

Pathways
  • · Eicosanoid production (COX/LOX)
  • · Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs)
  • · Membrane fluidity
Enzymes
  • · COX-2 (↓)
  • · 5-LOX (modulates)

Effects on the body

Decreases
Triglycerides (~20–30%)
Decreases
Systemic inflammation (hs-CRP)
Supports
Membrane health & cognition
Decreases
Resting heart rate

Organ system effects

Cardiovascular

Lowers TG, modestly lowers BP and resting HR, may reduce major cardiovascular events at 4 g/day EPA.

Brain & CNS

DHA is ~30% of brain phospholipids; supports synaptic membranes.

Eye

DHA concentrated in retinal photoreceptors.

Evidence-based benefits

Reduces triglycerides

Strong evidence

Reduces major cardiovascular events at high-dose prescription EPA

Strong evidence

Reduces depression severity (especially EPA-dominant)

Moderate evidence

Reduces joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis

Moderate evidence

Potential side effects

Common
  • · Fishy burps
  • · Mild GI upset
Rare
  • · Increased bleeding time at very high doses
Serious
  • · Atrial fibrillation risk at 4 g/day in some trials

Drug interactions

Anticoagulants (warfarin, DOACs)
May increase bleeding risk at high doses.
moderate
Anti-hypertensives
Additive BP lowering.
minor

Supplement interactions

Pairs well with
  • Vitamin E
    Protects PUFAs from peroxidation.
  • Vitamin D3
Synergistic for cardiovascular and immune health.
Avoid combining with
  • High-dose vitamin E + other antioxidants
May blunt some adaptive responses to training.

Dosing & bioavailability

Typical dose
2–3 g combined EPA+DHA
Beginner dose
1 g combined EPA+DHA
Study range
1–4 g/day
Upper safe limit
FDA: 3 g/day from supplements (5 g total)
Best form
rTG (re-esterified triglyceride) form, third-party tested for oxidation
Timing
With largest fatty meal
With food?
With food containing fat — critical for absorption
