How it acts on the body

Selank's anxiolytic effect comes from a different mechanism than benzodiazepines. Instead of binding GABA-A directly, it appears to inhibit the enzyme that breaks down enkephalins (an endogenous opioid-like neuropeptide system), and it modestly upregulates GABA tone indirectly. Because there is no direct receptor agonism, it does not produce dependence or sedation.

On the cognitive side, Selank raises BDNF expression in hippocampal regions and shifts the serotonergic balance toward serotonin reuptake and turnover. That combination — calmer amygdala signaling plus increased BDNF — is thought to underlie reports of feeling 'clear and unrushed' rather than sedated or numbed.
