How it acts on the body

Melanotan II is essentially alpha-MSH with the receptor selectivity stripped out. Alpha-MSH normally signals pigmentation only when the body needs it (after UV exposure); MT-II forces the entire melanocortin system 'on' regardless of UV. MC1R activation in melanocytes drives eumelanin synthesis (the darker, more protective form), which is why tanning happens even with very little sun exposure.

But because it isn't selective, it also activates MC4R (sexual arousal, appetite suppression), MC3R (energy balance), and MC5R (sebum and sweat). That receptor promiscuity explains the characteristic side-effect cluster — spontaneous erections, nausea, reduced appetite, increased sweating, and pigmentation changes — and is part of why the more selective melanocortin agonists like PT-141 were developed.
