How it acts on the body

Liraglutide was the first long-acting GLP-1 analog to see widespread clinical use. It uses the same fatty-acid albumin-binding trick as semaglutide but with a shorter chain, so dosing is daily rather than weekly.

Effects on weight loss and A1c are smaller than semaglutide or tirzepatide, but the daily dosing gives more flexibility to titrate around side effects. The mechanism, contraindications, and gastrointestinal side-effect profile are essentially identical to other GLP-1 agonists.
