How it acts on the body

Zonulin is the endogenous protein that signals intestinal tight junctions to open and close. In celiac disease and several other intestinal conditions, zonulin is overactive and tight junctions stay too open, allowing antigens to cross into the lamina propria and drive immune reactivity.

Larazotide is an antagonist that blocks zonulin-driven opening. Taken before meals, it reduces the post-gluten permeability and symptom flare in patients on a gluten-free diet who still react to trace exposure.
