How it acts on the body
Argireline mimics the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, the SNARE protein cleaved by botulinum toxin. By competing for the same binding site it partially destabilizes the SNARE complex, modestly reducing acetylcholine release and the depth of fine expression lines.
The effect is far weaker than botulinum toxin and reverses quickly once application stops, but it is non-invasive and well-tolerated, which keeps it in popular use.
